A tailor-made trip to discover the culture and culinary flavors of Sicily. Mount Etna*and Taormina
Breakfast at the hotel. Crossing suggestive landscapes, rich of different kinds of vegetation, we will reach the height of 2.000 meters to explore the highest active volcano in Europe: Mount Etna. Surrounded by ancient craters, you will admire a suggestive panorama of the Ionic Coast. We will visit the “Silvestri Craters” and the recent lava flows of 2001/2002. Stop at a local winery to visit its vineyards and to enjoy a wine tasting and a lunch based on typical products. We will then proceed to Taormina, “the pearl of the Ionic Sea”. During the walking tour, you will have the chance to visit the Ancient Greek Theatre, the Duomo, the Belvedere and also to go shopping among the typical small streets of this nice town. Dinner on your own. Back to the hotel and overnight. (*)On request the HD excursion to Mount Etna can be replaced with a Traditional Sicilian cooking class in Taormina (lunch included). Modica and Ragusa
Breakfast at your hotel and depart to Modica, part of UNESCO Heritage Sites, for a pleasant walking tour in the charming historical center rich in chapels, churches, monasteries and Baroque palaces. Stop in a local laboratory to taste the famous chocolate deriving from an ancient Aztec recipe and to learn how it is produced. Free time for lunch on your own. In the afternoon we will visit an olive-mill to learn the process of oil production and to taste extra virgin olive oil and other local products (olives pickled in oil, tomatoes, bread, pesto sauces, jams, Nero d’Avola wine). We will then proceed to Ragusa and visit the enchanting historical center “Ibla”, rich of Baroque palaces and churches. There you will enjoy a tasting of typical products of the island nearby the Dome: jams, biscuits, salami, cheese etc. Accommodation at hotel in Ragusa area, dinner and overnight. On your way, you will have the chance to discover Sicily through its wine-growing areas by visiting the vineyards of a winery in Ragusa area, where you will learn the history of Sicilian viticulture and enjoy wine tasting. Free time for lunch. In the afternoon, we will discover the ancient city of Akragas, visiting the Valley of the Temples: the Temple of Juno, Concord, Heracles, Zeus, Castor & Pollux. Marsala, Erice and Palermo
Breakfast at the hotel and depart to Marsala, enjoying a panoramic tour of the salt pans and windmills. During the short visit of the city, known all over the world for the production of its dessert wine, you will be charmed by its Duomo, the Church and the Fountain of Purgatorio and the ancient Sea Gate (Porta di Mare). Stop at Donnafugata Winery for wine tasting and light lunch with specialties of the Mediterranean cuisine. Optional visit to the small island of Mothia, the ancient Phoenician colony, situated just in the center of the Stagnone Lagoon. Proceed to the medieval town of Erice, where you will enjoy a beautiful view of the West Coast and Egadi Islands. During the walking tour among the small streets of the town, you will visit the Duomo with its Campanile (bell tower) and admire the suggestive 12th-century Norman Castle. Palermo Tasting of Street Food and Monreale
After breakfast at the hotel, the whole morning will be dedicated to a guided tour through the traditional food markets in Palermo (Capo, Ballarò, Vucciria). During this walking tour, you will taste the main samples of street food of the city: Sfincione, panelle, crocchè, arancini, pane con la milza, Sicilian cannoli and local dessert wines such as Zibibbo, Marsala and Sangue Siciliano. In the afternoon, depart to Monreale to admire the Norman Cathedral with its splendid 12th-century mosaics and the cloister of the Benedictines monastery with Moorish architecture. Palermo Pastry Class, Cefalu' and Catania
Breakfast at the hotel. This morning you will take part in a Frutta Martorana workshop(*), to experience how this specialty is produced nowadays. Enjoy a light lunch offered by the chef. You will then depart to Cefalù, a medieval charming town, known for its Arab-Norman Cathedral and the medieval wash-house built in the rock. Proceed to Catania.
