Messina, Tindari, Santo Stefano Camastra & Cefalu'
You will be picked from your desired destination and our tour begins. We drive in the scenic coast road direction Messina the third biggest City in Sicily. We stop at the fantastic Sanctuary of the Montalto Madonna, offering perhaps the best views in Messina; take in the Cathedral and the Astronomical clock. You will observe what appear to be a huge church settled precariously high on a mountain: this is the Sanctuary in Tindari and our first stop. After visiting the Sanctuary, you will have the chance to stroll around the Greek ruins and see the magnificent views of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Oliveri-Tindari lagoon, a small water channel of outstanding beauty that today is a natural reserve. Time will be dedicated to lunch; your driver/escort will discuss your options depending on your needs.
After lunch our tour continues and we drive back along the coastal street and our next stop is Santo Stefano di Camastra, this picturesque town is home to the traditional craft of ceramics; stroll the streets and admire the typical crafts shops showing off their unique style and skills. From Santo Stefano, we will drive to the final destination of today, the city of Cefalu'. This pretty coastal town is full of tortuous Medieval streets and hosts a unique Norman cathedral. We will visit the Cathedral and you will also have the chance to approach The Rocca, with an altitude of 270m to see the spectacular remains of the Castle are worth the ascend. Monreale, Palermo & San Vito Lo Capo
At your own pace, we leave Cefalu and lead for Monreale, hosting one of Europe’s great cathedrals. Our tour takes us into the city center of Palermo; this vibrant bustling city has some of the most important baroque buildings in Italy: The Norman Palace, The Palatine Chapel, the Church of Santa Chiara and the famous Piazza Quattro Canti. We will spend the rest of our day discovering the City. We make the travel to San Vito Lo Capo. Famous for its exceptional beaches San Vito Lo Capo has won many prizes, home to the celebrated Zingaro Natural Reserve and famous for its couscous dishes, making San Vito a fantastic overnight stay. Erice, Trapani, Marsala & Mazzara Del Vallo
After breakfast and at your own pace we leave San Vito and lead for Trapani, renowned for its sea salt extraction and great Arabic influenced viands it is also the gateway via a funicular to Erice. Erice is Sicily’s most fascinating village, a magnificent mountaintop set that appears more Tuscan than Sicilian, offering breathtaking views as far as Tunisia and Etna Volcano. We visit the Venus Castle, the salt mine museum and the Annunziata Sanctuary a 14th-century convent whose cloisters included the major museum of Trapani and of course Erice..
After Lunch, we drive south of the Island direction Marsala. The Westernmost point of Sicily and famous for its sweet wine. Marsala has a lot of history including the arrival of Garibaldi and his brigade in 1860 to overturn the Bourbon Kingdom. Admiral Nelson also spent much time around this area after winning against Napoleon introducing sweet wine to the British Navy as an alternative to Port. We will visit the Florio Estate. Vincenzo Florio and John Woodhouse arrived in Marsala in 1773 and discovered the local strong wine. They became pioneers in selling Marsala all over the world. The Final destination of our day is Mazara Del Vallo, one of the Arabs most important Sicilian place. A maze of small streets and alleyways knew as La Casbah lead to Count Rogers Norman Castle and the 11th Century Cathedral of San Salvatore. Mazara still has a strong Arabic relation due to its multicultural inhabitant. Lodging and evening meal can be organized for you on request.
Selinunte, Agrigento & Caltagirone
Day four and we drive further south, with a visit to the solemn Greek ruins of Selinunte, the site is one of the most overwhelming in Sicily and definitely worth a visit. We proceed to Agrigento the home of the Greek Temples. Agrigento has one of the most important archaeological sites in the world called Greek Temples Valley. Part of the antique city of Agrakas, the Greek author and poet Pindar described it as “one of the most beautiful cities of those inhabited by mortals”. Today its former greatness is still evident in the valley’s seven temples; The Concordia Temple is one of the best maintained Greek temples in the world allowing the site to gain the classic UNESCO world heritage award.
We leave Agrigento and continue our tour. Caltagirone, a charming hilltop town and is home to the art of producing handmade colorful ceramics. The areas of high-quality argil have sustained manufacturing for more than 1000 years. Here, we visit the ceramics museum, walk around and see some of the 120 pottery shops, selling typical pieces by famous local artisans. Stroll around the perfectly preserved public gardens and take a comfortable walk up the beautiful Scalinata di Santa Maria del Monte. This will be our final overnight stay and lodging and the evening meal can be organized for you on request.
Modica, Ragusa Ibla, Noto & Ortigia
The last day of this fantastic tour, after breakfast we head south towards Modica, as we travel over the 300 meters high Guerrieri Bridge we catch the first appearance of Modica, deep down below the gorge. Buildings and houses arise from the bottom of the gorge apparently piled one on top of the other. Modica is also the guardian of a 400-year tradition of Sicilian chocolate making. We will visit one of the oldest chocolate stores in Modica to experience their Aztec chocolate formula. Modica was sorely damaged in the 1693 earthquake and largely reconstruct in Sicilian Baroque style. It is divided into two main parts, “upper” Modica and “lower” Modica. Before leaving we will also visit the fantastic baroque church of San Giorgio. We visit a fantastic winery to dine and wine tasting, then our tour proceeds towards one of the best preserved old towns in Sicily, Ragusa Ibla.
Divided from Ragusa by a deep canyon this fabulous town is home to the UNESCO listed “Giardino Ibleo” a fantastic botanical garden with splendid visions and three churches. We drive to our next stop Noto, a terrific baroque style town that vaunts one of Sicily’s most beautiful historical center. A visit to Saint Nicholas Cathedral is not to be missed; here you will have the option of climbing to the top of the bell tower and admire the breathtaking vista. The final gem of our tour will be old city of Ortigia in Siracusa. The chance to visit The Dome, a light lunch or tour by boat around the bay, the Temple of Athena and a stroll around the shaded, sandy colored streets taking in the huge baroque building is a must. Our drive back to our chosen final destination will leave you memories on the eclectic mixture of architectonic cultures and settings.
